Florida State was two outs away from quite the statement Saturday.

2020欧洲杯正规平台The 14th-ranked FSU baseball team entered the weekend ready to test itself against a pair of significantly better teams than the two it faced to start the season.

2020欧洲杯正规平台Playing host to No. 3 Texas Tech and Florida Atlantic Saturday in a doubleheader, the Seminoles were on the verge of quite the sweep as they took a 5-4 lead into the nightcap vs. TTU after a dominant win over FAU earlier in the day.

2020欧洲杯正规平台A TTU homer from right fielder Dru Baker tied the game with one out in the ninth. An unfortunate and very untimely throwing error on FSU third baseman Carter Smith brought in what became the game-winning run in the 11th as the Seminoles (8-2) a 6-5 extra-innings loss to the Red Raiders (10-1) Saturday night at Dick Howser Stadium.

FSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the 11th before a flyout from Smith stranded the bases full, leaving FSU 90 feet away from plating the tying run.

"Heck of a ballgame," FSU head coach Mike Martin Jr. said.

2020欧洲杯正规平台"Baseball fans, that's what you come out for. Two heavyweights. They're a top-notch program, we are too. We went toe-to-toe, came up short."

Don't take Martin's introductory comment, though, as one finding a moral victory in the loss.

2020欧洲杯正规平台"It's about winning. Sure you can learn from it, but there's no consolation prizes around here. Got to get it done."

2020欧洲杯正规平台The loss snaps FSU's eight-game win streak and leaves them just short of what would have been a major quality win.

In the opener against FAU (7-3), the Seminoles faced an early deficit, but rallied behind a pair of six-run innings to come away with a 16-6 win, capping off a two-game sweep of the Owls after Friday's 5-1 win.

On the bump

True freshman Bryce Hubbart made his first career start in the first game of the doubleheader after starting the season as the Seminoles' closer.

2020欧洲杯正规平台Unfortunately, his debut start had some of the same struggles he started the season with in the bullpen. He allowed a pair of first-inning home runs and was chased before the end of the second inning, allowing three runs, all earned, on two hits over 1.1 innings. Three walks and a hit-by-pitch added to his struggles.

2020欧洲杯正规平台While Hubbart's start was underwhelming, Jack Anderson (1-0) earned his first win of the season with a spectacular relief appearance. He threw 4.2 innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits, walking none and striking out four.

"It was critical, someone to come in and calm it down and give us a chance to get back in it," Martin Jr. said.

"I've said it from the beginning, Jack has really done an absolute 180. He's a top of the line guy now."

With the game turning from an FSU deficit to a large FSU lead during Anderson's extended appearance, it left Clayton Kwiatkowski and Tyler Ahearn to close out the game with a comfortable lead. They allowed one run each, combining to throw the final three innings to close out a sweep of the Owls.

Junior Shane Drohan got the nod for FSU to start the nightcap against Texas Tech. For much of his outing, the control issues that plagued him were gone.

He was pulled with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth inning. He allowed four runs, one earned, on three hits. Two of his three walks were issued in the fifth inning, but he also set a new career-high with nine strikeouts against an extremely talented TTU lineup.

The FSU bullpen largely did a good job keeping the Red Raiders in check as well. Chase Haney relieved Drohan and allowed the three runners he inherited to score on a looping double to right, but the FSU bullpen settled in from there.

Four FSU relievers combined to allow just one earned run over the final six innings.

Freshman Parker Messick, in particular, stood out. He threw the final 3.1 innings and took the loss behind Smith's error, but allowed just one earned run over his lengthy outing, striking out five batters.

2020欧洲杯正规平台"I've been coaching a long time, he's made as big a good impression (as anyone) as a man," Martin Jr. said.

"He's a winner, he's a great teammate, he's ultra-competitive and obviously he's talented. He's special."

2020欧洲杯正规平台Overall, the Seminoles retired 19 TTU batters by strikeout over their 11 innings of work. Going against a lineup that had eight players enter Saturday hitting .350 or better, that makes this accomplishment even more impressive.

Errors again loom large

Once again, defensive issues were rampant for the Seminoles in the loss in Saturday's second game. This time, FSU was unable to overcome them.

Smith's fatal error was the most significant, but it was just one of four FSU committed in the loss. Add that to three errors from the win over FAU earlier in the day and FSU committed seven errors Saturday.

2020欧洲杯正规平台Four of those errors were on shortstop Jackson Greene and two were on Smith.

In 10 games this season, FSU has committed 25 errors and has not had an error-free game yet.

Martins lead offensive outburst

Tyler and Robby Martin shared more than just a last name in the FSU lineup Saturday.

They're not related, but the pair each put on a show in Saturday's doubleheader, leading the Seminoles' offense.

Tyler finished the day with five hits in eight at-bats. Of those hits, three were extra-base hits (two doubles and one triple) and he scored four runs and knocked in three more. With his strong day, he raised his batting average to .444, nearly 100 points higher than any other member of the FSU lineup.

2020欧洲杯正规平台His RBI double in the sixth inning that scored Cooper Swanson against Texas Tech brought in what would have been the game-winning run.

2020欧洲杯正规平台Seeing his early impact this season, it's worth remembering that he's an early enrollee who is supposed to still be a senior in high school.

2020欧洲杯正规平台FSU sophomore right fielder Robby Martin also came up big for the Seminoles in both games Saturday. In the win over the Owls, he had three hits, scored a run and had four RBI on a pair of two-run singles.

2020欧洲杯正规平台With four more hits against the Red Raiders, he finished the day with seven hits in 11 at-bats. He bumped his season RBI total up to 12 and brought his batting average up to .375.

2020欧洲杯正规平台As a team, though, FSU struggled against TTU, striking out 19 times.
