Florida State women's basketball coach Sue Semrau struggled to put into the words the impact this year's senior class has made.
No. 22 FSU (22-6, 11-6 in ACC) will honor its trio of seniors before taking on Notre Dame (12-17, 7-10 in ACC) on Senior Day Sunday at 2 p.m.
The contributions from each of these seniors -- guards Nicki Ekhomu and Nausia Woolfolk and forward Kiah Gillespie -- have paved the way for FSU's success in each of the last two seasons.
"How do you quantify it?" Semrau said.
It's not only been what they've done on the floor and their stats, the way they fill up the stat line. It's who they are. In their leadership roles, they've been so unique and so important to this team, each one in their own way."
Woolfolk and Ekhomu are the two four-year players at FSU. Each joined the 1,000-point club earlier this season.
Gillespie started her career at Maryland and spent her final two years of eligibility at FSU after transferring and sitting out in 2017-18. She's over 1,000 career points and enters the Notre Dame game with an impressive 960 points in less than two full seasons at FSU.
After the Seminoles lost five seniors entering last season, this group of juniors was thrust into a new leadership role on a senior-less team. They were up to the task, averaging a combined 44.7 points, 65.3% of the team's scoring.
This year, the seniors are again leading the way, averaging 60.7% of the team's scoring as they have FSU in position to make its 15th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 16 years.
"Closing out at home, celebrating our seniors who have meant so much to this program," Semrau said.
"I can't say enough about what they've given in the time they've been here."
Although a farewell of sorts in what will very likely be their final game at the Tucker Civic Center, the seniors are trying to approach the game like any other.
I don't really have any emotions," Woolfolk said.
It's just focusing on a win. It's not an end for us, it's looking towards the tournament. It's going to be sad, but it is what it is, we're just going to have fun and try to go out with a bang. Simple as that."
This doesn't surprise their head coach.
"I know that'll be over as soon as the ball is tipped," Semrau said of the emotion.
"They're the kind of competitors that want to go out and play a great basketball game. It'd be a big win for us. We need it."
The Seminoles will have a solid chance at their first-ever win over Notre Dame. FSU is 0-9 against the Fighting Irish all-time. After Notre Dame lost in the NCAA Championship Game last year to Baylor, it entered this year with a young team and has also battled injuries that have the team well outside the NCAA Tournament picture.
But Semrau knows better than to take the Irish lightly.
They're growing up, they're young. They got a huge lead against Syracuse, they beat Carolina (Thursday) by a bunch," Semrau said.
"They just don't have five seniors. We had five seniors two years ago. It's very different. They're growing up so we're going to be very focused on who they are."
With tickets to FSU's regular-season finale on sale for only a dollar, she's hopeful FSU fans respond by showing up and supporting her team -- and her seniors -- one final time.
We want to pack this place. It's dollar (ticket) night to be able to come out and help us really send this team off to the ACC Tournament in style," Semrau said.
"They deserve it. I hope we have the kind of crowd Notre Dame normally does."
