Florida State closing center in Florence, Italy; assisting 93 students with transition

Florida State University has canceled spring studies in Florence, Italy, and is shutting down its study center there next week, according to a Monday announcement.
The university is assisting its 93 students in the Florence program with instructions and assistance regarding travel, academics, finances and other needs, the university said.
2020欧洲杯正规平台“Florence students have been instructed to self-isolate for 14 days upon return from Italy,” the statement said. “Florence students should not return to the main campus.”
2020欧洲杯正规平台Also, FSU President John Thrasher announced Tuesday visits to campus by Visiting Student Scholars are being postponed.
Visiting scholars from around the world and the nation come to campus at the invitation of an FSU faculty or staff member working in their field.
Fifteen students were scheduled to come as Visiting Scholars in the next three months. They will be rescheduled.
“The Center for Global Engagement is reaching out and working directly with affected guests,” Thrasher said in a campus email. “Future invitations related to Visiting Student Scholars are being delayed until further notice.”
FSU has 21 instructors in Florence this semester, all of whom are local and are not leaving the city. They will finish teaching their spring courses by distance learning for any students who wish to finish courses started in Florence.
Spring semester programs at Florida State University's other international study centers are continuing and are not affected by Monday’s decision. In addition to Florence, FSU has international study centers in London, England; Panama City, Republic of Panama; and Valencia, Spain.

Ron DeSantis declaring a public health emergency Sunday after two reports of “presumptive” positive cases of the respiratory illness COVID-19 caused by a new coronavirus, reported over the weekend in Florida — one in Hillsborough County and the other in Manatee County.
2020欧洲杯正规平台Also Monday, the State University System's Board of Governors notified university presidents and provosts that all employees and students who return from travel in China, Iran, Italy, Japan and South Korea are ordered to self-quarantine and not return to campus for 14 days after their return.
“Our greatest concern is the health and safety of our students and the university community,” Chancellor Marshall Criser III said. “Our hope is that everyone follows the guidance of our health officials to protect their own well-being as well as our state.”
The Board of Governors also recommended canceling any university-related travel to the affected countries.
“Our office is continuing to work with the Governor’s Office, the Florida Department of Health, the universities and other entities to monitor this matter closely and will issue further guidance if the need arises,” Criser said.

On Friday, Florida State University President John Thrasher announced the university extended its university travel ban to Japan, Iran and Italy, effective for all university and faculty-related trips. It previously had banned travel to China and South Korea.
