Tie this on for size: Shakespeare Uncorked fundraiser has gender-bending fun
I love wearing ties. I first experimented (don’t we all?) during my freshman year in college.
For Halloween that year, my then boyfriend, Kevin, and I did the gender swap: He wore the lipstick and frilly dress; I, the mustache and tie.
I recall looking at myself, fully costumed now with top hat, mustache, and tie, and thinking, “Damn, She’s the Man!” Of course, I also recall looking at my boyfriend and silently fretting that he wore the lipstick and lashes so much better than I did.
2020欧洲杯正规平台A decade or so later, Andy Fickman would use those words to title his box-office hit "She’s the Man," starring Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum. The film is based on William Shakespeare’s "Twelfth Night," where a teenager (Viola) disguises herself to gain entry into Orsino’s court in Elizabethan England. In the modern (film) version, Viola pretends to be her brother at an all-boys’ prep school to play with the boys’ soccer team after her own school’s soccer team is disbanded.
2020欧洲杯正规平台Shakespeare had some serious fun in many of his plays with disguises and gender bending. But this fun often exposed the more insidious truth about gender, where women did not have the same opportunities or choices as men did in their relationships, in their education or in their profession. Still, these women, disguised as men, set the scene for some classic comedic moments.
2020欧洲杯正规平台This year, Southern Shakespeare Company has some gender-bending fun with their annual fundraising event Shakespeare Uncorked. It makes total sense, as their Free Shakespeare in the Park production this year is "Twelfth Night" (guest starring the Emmy-award nominated actor, writer and comedian Kevin McDonald from "Kids in the Hall").
For the past few years, the Governors Club has hosted this wine tasting/food pairing event. The wines keep flowing and the food is prepared by some of the best in town at Lucilla, Il Lusso, Governors Club, The Edison, the Over/Under Bar, Lucy & Leo’s, and Sage.
And while it’s NOT Halloween, Southern Shakespeare invites their guests to mix it up with mustaches, top hats, feather boas and, yes, ties.
2020欧洲杯正规平台I challenge the women to learn to tie one on for size. There really is a sense of power that comes with that tie.
And I challenge anyone to look better in lipstick than Kevin did.
