25 Women: From sports to children, Alice Sims works to lead the team
2020欧洲杯正规平台As a member of the FSU track team in the early '80s Alice Sims developed a connection with running relays. “I was a curve runner,” she recalls. “That was my responsibility. You cannot be just an individual on a relay team. Everyone has to work together.”
2020欧洲杯正规平台Now decades later, Sims has built a legacy around connecting others with what she calls a “baton of opportunity.” Through her professional work with the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice and volunteer work with multiple community outreach programs, her infectious passion for Florida’s children connects and inspires.
Now in its 14th year, the 25 Women program is the Tallahassee Democrat’s way of honoring women who lead. Look for their profiles during March in print and at guatemo.com.
2020欧洲杯正规平台Sims and her husband, Ernie, met as students at Florida State University and quickly decided to marry and raise a family in Tallahassee. Ernie had played football at FSU, two of their sons played college football, and one son went off to play in the NFL.
“Sports has been a foundation of my life,” Sims explains. “It taught me about teamwork, collaboration, working together, and shaped my values.” She and Ernie both knew early in their careers that they wanted to work for the betterment of the lives of children, considering their work a calling from God to use their strengths to build healthy families. “To see young people overcome adversity and thrive in their lives, to see them get to a place where they can be successful, that is my calling.”
She became a case manager for the Department of Juvenile Justice, and formed The WAY Ministries, a faith-based organization dedicated to meeting the spiritual, social, and physical needs of young people and their families. She co-founded the Capital City Christian Cruisers, a track program that provides athletic and character building opportunities for at-risk youth.
“I live by the four Ds,” she says, her voice filled with purpose and conviction. “Dedication, determination, discipline, and drive.” Her motto is, “no excuses,” and she strives to lead by example. She cannot ignore her calling to work with young people, surrounding them with the right resources at the right time, working with parents and extended family members, and reminding them of the times that they have been victorious, and that they can do it again.
Widely respected for her commitment to reducing juvenile crime, Sims is currently the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice’s Assistant Secretary for Prevention Services, having previously worked as the Director of Health and Medical Services, among other roles. “My focus is on prevention,” Sims explains. “We work with community agencies to create early intervention programs both regionally and state-wide to keep kids out of the justice system.”
She developed the F.I.R.E. Academy, which connected local firefighters as mentors for at-risk youth, as well as other county programs that served youth placed on probation. She is also the Past-President of the Florida Council on Crime and Delinquency, seeking to pass the baton to others who feel the same call.
She shines when telling the story of her son Ernie Sims, who was inspired by his parents’ work with The WAY Ministries to form the Ernie Sims Big HITS Foundation, where she currently serves as the chairman of the board. The foundation has provided scholarships to over 5,000 student-athletes and sports camps to youth in the Big Bend area for thirteen years. “We partner with local parks and recreation departments and Boys and Girls Clubs to provide football and cheer camps, as well as scholarships for student athletes.”
2020欧洲杯正规平台When Alice and Ernie Sims decided to make Tallahassee their home and raise a family here, they didn’t realize it would extend beyond their own children. But Sims sees each child who comes into her path as a member of her family, and their welfare a personal responsibility of her own. She works to pass the baton of opportunity to others in our community who can help children thrive. “I challenge everyone to become passionate about making a difference in the life of a child. Whether it is reading for thirty minutes a week at school, helping to put on a camp, or being a mentor to an at-risk youth, your time makes a difference.”
2020欧洲杯正规平台Alice Sims has a passion for young people that comes from within and extends into every corner of our community. Is the baton being extended to you? Alice Sims’ team is going to win.
